The Home of
Marcus Dewitt Carlock
The Carlock House Museum is open on select days for tours and an opportunity to learn more about the families who have inhabited the house and their links to local, state, and national history. The story of the Carlock House is a story of triumph and progress in the small town of Winnsboro, Texas.
The house is a testament to the idea that "it doesn't matter where you came from. It matters where you are going" and "always remember where you came from, always stay humber, kind, and never let anything or anyone stop you from chasing your dreams." You can make leave your mark on history in the simplest of ways.

If the walls could talk and tell us the many stories of the different visitors to the property it would all start in the stately dining room where you too can enjoy a breakfast surrounded by the ambience of years past.
Event Venue
Over the years many outstanding events have been held inside The Carlock House and on the grounds. Originally 20 acres, the remaining 2 acres of grounds at Oaklea Mansion contain the house, shell of the carriage house that has been adapted to an apartment and event center, fountains, Koi Pond, gardens, and wedding or special event spaces.
History
Built in 1903, The Carlock House was built to entertain. Marcus Dewitt Carlock, Sr. entertained my politicians during his time and the house has seen many new beginnings and celebrations of life thought out the years. Constructed mostly of heart pine from the East Texas Area the house was built with the flow of visitors in mind. The ceilings on the first floor are 12 feet high and each room tells a new story from the one entered before it.

The exterior footprint of the house has not been altered since its construction. Although the porches have been opened and closed throughout the house's existence it remains a fine example of neoclassical and victorian architecture, defined by simple geometric forms, Greek/Roman detail, use of columns, and blank walls which can be seen throughout the mansion.
